Ethereum Name Service Drops Lawsuit Over eth.link Domain

Mary

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has officially withdrawn its lawsuit concerning the eth.link domain name. Eth.link serves as a resolution service for .eth domain names, allowing users to access .eth addresses through the eth.link domain.

The dispute originated when the domain’s registrant, who had been imprisoned for aiding North Korea in circumventing sanctions, saw the domain expire during his incarceration. The domain, registered with Uniregistry, was auctioned off by Dynadot—Uniregistry’s auction partner—after it expired. The winning bid of $852,000 was placed by Manifold Finance.

ENS initiated legal action against GoDaddy (NYSE: GDDY), which owns Uniregistry, as well as Dynadot and Manifold Finance. However, due to escalating litigation costs, ENS requested in February that the ENS DAO approve a settlement. The DAO consented to a deal that would reimburse ENS Labs for its legal fees and pay Manifold Finance $300,000, with the agreement that ENS would retain ownership of the domain.

The settlement agreement, filed today, resolves the case with all parties dismissed with prejudice, excluding Manifold, which had previously been removed from the case due to jurisdictional issues. It remains uncertain whether ENS ultimately reached a settlement with Manifold for the $300,000 as previously agreed. It is likely that GoDaddy and Dynadot sought a resolution involving Manifold before consenting to the dismissal.
