Study Finds Google AI Overviews Nearly Identical to Top Organic Search Results

A recent analysis conducted by SEO platform seoClarity found sources cited in Google’s AI Overview panels now match the top 10 organic search results 99.5% of the time.

Lead researcher Mark Traphagen evaluated 36,000 keyword queries and shared the results on LinkedIn. This marks a tremendous shift from prior studies showing AI Overviews sourced outside top results up to 93.8% of the time.

Once referred to as Search Generative Experience before being rebranded, Google’s AI panel responses were criticized early on for including less trustworthy sources. This led to some factually inaccurate answers.

To improve quality, experts believe Google has incorporated traditional ranking signals into its Gemini AI model. Top-performing organic pages now enjoy high chances of appearance in AI panels.

As one industry observer noted, AI Overview optimization essentially means optimizing search engine rankings. Gaining prominence organically enhances the likelihood of mentions algorithmically.

The overhaul suggests Google has honed how it selects content for AI-generated previews. Marketers can refine strategies to perform well across both standard results and algorithmic panels.

The findings indicate improved relevance and credibility of AI panel sources going forward for users. Additionally, search engine ranking efforts may see larger return on investment.
